Yes, absolutely! It is great for women because it focuses on technique that allows a smaller person to defend against a larger attacker. BJJ can be great for self defense and situational awareness. Vanguard Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the only academies in the area with a female black belt head instructor.

Now is the best time, no matter your age or athletic level. You do not need to be "in shape" to start jiu jitsu. People come in all shapes and sizes and everyone is welcome at Vanguard Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Just show up 10-15 minutes before class starts in athletic clothes to sign a waiver, and to find a loaner gi that fits you. Please have water for yourself or your child.

Uniform Requirements:

We only require clean attire. You can wear whatever color gi you would like. For nogi, please no pockets or zippers. Men are required to wear shorts, with or without spats, during nogi. Please make sure to trim your nails!

Do I have to compete?

While we highly encourage competition for both our youth and adult members, it is never a requirement for membership or promotions. Everyone is here for a different reason, and we are here to support whatever reason that is.

How do promotions work?

Belts and stripes are always earned and promotions are given based on time, skill, and previous experience. We follow time requirements as set forth by IBJJF, and follow their belt system, while only using solid colors for kids promotions. We will have promotion ceremonies regularly so family and friends can come celebrate the amazing achievements and sacrifices our students make.
